The Opportunity

The organisation:

Ellwood Atfield is delighted to have partnered with Electrical Safety First (ESF) to recruit for a Research and Outreach Officer.

Electrical Safety First is the UK’s leading charity on electrical safety, and they regularly work with the media, government, businesses, and electrical industry to make sure that everyone in the UK can use electricity safely. They campaign on issues including the regulation of e-bike and e-scooter batteries, product recall and registration, electrical DIY, the importance of using registered electricians and counterfeit electrical goods, through raising awareness with the public and working with politicians to ensure Government is doing all it can to keep people safe from electrical accidents.

The opportunity:

This role combines research, outreach, and grant management skills to drive Electrical Safety First’s mission to reduce deaths, injuries, and electrical accidents, particularly for society’s most vulnerable.

As a Research and Outreach Officer, you will help manage the Charity’s grant scheme programme that funds community-based initiatives to raise awareness and reduce risk, helping to support local organisations to create tangible change in their communities. You’ll support the Charity’s research initiatives and identify opportunities for impactful projects, develop robust methodologies, and translate findings into high-quality reports that influence policy and practice.

Your role also involves strengthening outreach initiatives, engaging with local government, mayoral offices, and community leaders to raise awareness of their work and disseminate resources to those in need. You’ll arrange and coordinate the Charity’s participation in community events, ensuring their safety messages reach key stakeholders and those most at electrical risk.

Main responsibilities:

  • Manage the Charity's grant scheme programme, which includes developing and promoting funding opportunities, coordinating application review and assessment, and communicating with applicants.
  • Manage funding awards, including agreements and funding payments, monitoring compliance, keeping accurate records of grant activities, and completing evaluation reports on programme completion.
  • Support the synthesis and preparation of research findings for reporting, which will involve categorisation, analysis, and identification of themes, including cleaning data for presentation.
  • Collaborate with internal colleagues to ensure that grant scheme programmes are aligned with the charity's goals and objectives and publicised effectively.
  • Oversee day-to-day contact with funded partners to support successful project delivery, responding to inquiries and conducting regular project visits to maximise publicity opportunities.
  • Plan and carry out community and outreach events, such as those organised by elected representatives, to connect with stakeholders, raise visibility, and enhance awareness of the Charity's work in the local community.
  • Support research planning activities, such as methodology design and horizon scanning for new opportunities.
  • Support examination of the broader literature & relevant research on electrical safety.

Person specification:

  • Familiarity with research projects and ability to creatively process and present new information.
  • Excellent data handling skills, ideally handling and manipulating datasets through data visualisation software such as Power BI.
  • Excellent organisational, administration and project management skills, with the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including effectively communicating with a range of audiences.
  • An interest in and motivation for Electrical Safety First’s cause, with a willingness to learn and grow within the role

Benefits:

  • Salary: £30,000
  • Hybrid working (willing to travel for meetings)
  • Private health care
  • Competitive private pension
  • Bike loan scheme
  • 25 days annual leave plus bank holidays
