We are honoured to annually host the Political Cartoon of the Year Awards to celebrate the UK’s political cartoons and cartoonists. Political cartoons are a key part of political journalism, offering a colourful, accessible alternative to traditional news reporting. They distil news and opinions into caricatures, providing instant commentary on current affairs. Unlike conventional media, political cartoons can powerfully interpret news in ways articles and commentary cannot, often capturing the human nature of their subjects.
Their satirical nature, combining humour with political news, makes them engaging and effective. Politicians often accept cartoons as signs of their relevance rather than criticise them. Beyond being news sources, political cartoons serve as historical records, proving their lasting value in an evolving media landscape.

Ellwood Atfield’s chosen charity is The Listening Place.
The Listening Place offers free, confidential, face-to-face support for people who are feeling suicidal. Support is by appointment only and continues for as long as the person needs – it is delivered by well-trained volunteers. In our first month we accepted nine referrals, we now accept 800 referrals of suicidal people every month from nearly 200 partner organisations.
We will be opening our 4th centre in 2025 to respond to the rising demand for our support and this year we estimate that we will support close to 7500 suicidal individuals. By appointment only.
