Our client, one of the best-known names in the insurance sector, has created this new role to promote, maintain and enhance the reputation of the company with stakeholders in Westminster, Whitehall and other external bodies.  Working closely with colleagues across the business, the role holder will develop and deliver a public affairs plan and policy positions that advance the interests of the firm, its brokers and customers.  The role holder will work closely with the Head of External Affairs to support the implementation of the wider external affairs across a variety of stakeholder audiences.

Main responsibilities

  • Develop, shape and deliver a strategic public affairs plan to build the company’s reputation and positioning in its sector, alongside a package of sharp, insightful, representative policy positions on a range of issues
  • Establish relationships with key external stakeholders including but not limited to parliamentarians, civil servants, policy makers, partner organisations, representative bodies and other external agencies
  • Develop agile submissions and responses to key moments in the political calendar including the Budget, Queen's Speech, Spring Statement, key legislation and Select Committees 
  • In partnership with the Media Relations Manager and Digital Team, lead a ‘quick response’ capacity for responding to issues that are underpinned by policy positions and oversee the preparation of agile briefs for senior executive on public and media engagements where necessary
  • Support senior colleagues with political engagements including, but not limited to, preparing for select committees and stakeholder meetings, drafting consultation responses and policy positions. 

Key skills and experience required

  • Proven and extensive experience in a communication, engagement or political environment, ideally in the financial services sector
  • A keen interest in politics as well as a strong understanding of the way that the legislative and regulatory environment operates and affects insurance and the broader financial services sector
  • Ability to build relationships and provide strategic counsel to senior leaders and key stakeholders
  • Ability to take ownership of projects and work collaboratively in a fast-paced environment
  • Ability to effectively manage and motivate external agencies.
